Job Description

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is one of the largest charities in the DC area. The Y serves as an anchor in the community offering programs and services encompassing youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility:

  • Assists Aquatic Director/Assistant Director in recruiting pool managers, lifeguards, instructors, and other department staff as required
  • Schedules all department operating staff
  • Orients and trains new aquatic staff
  • Insures that all aquatic staff’s training and certifications are up to date
  • Provides feedback to Aquatic Director/Assistant Director regarding staff performance
  • Ensures that all aquatic staff complete a quarterly skills checklist
  • May coordinate some aquatic programs
  • Maintains inventory of all supplies for proper operation of the aquatic department
  • Assists with planning, promoting, and implementing all aquatic related member retention activities
  • May assume responsibilities of Aquatic Director/Assistant Director in his/her absence
  • Ensures that safety and maintenance needs of the pool are brought to the attention of the Aquatic Director and Building Engineer
  • Other duties as required

Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years old
  • Current lifeguard certifications
  • Certified in CPR Pro
  • Certified in First Aid
  • Pool operator’s license for the jurisdiction in which employed
  • Must have 1500 hours experience including supervision of staff in a work environment
  • Must meet all the essential functions of a lifeguard
  • Must be well organized and able to work a flexible schedule
  • YMCA lifeguard trainer within 6 months of hire
  • CPR/AED and first aid trainer within 6 months of hire

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to do heavy lifting – equipment, people, and chemicals
  • Must be able to lift and move around objects of 40 pounds or more
  • Must be able to climb and use a variety of aquatic and cleaning equipment
  • Must have mechanical aptitude and strong problem solving skills
  • Must have the physical ability to meet all prerequisites for YMCA Lifeguarding
  • Swim 500 yards
  • Tread water for two minutes. (Legs only)
  • Retrieve training victim from bottom deep end
  • Active victim rescue with tube
  • Passive victim rescue with tube
  • Backboard victim
  • Ability to see and hear participants in distress or asking for assistance

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $16.00 /hour
